The boy who knew too much: a child prodigy

This is the true story of scientific child prodigy, and former baby genius, Ainan Celeste Cawley, written by his father. It is the true story, too, of his gifted brothers and of all the Cawley family. I write also of child prodigy and genius in general: what it is, and how it is so often neglected in the modern world. As a society, we so often fail those we should most hope to see succeed: our gifted children and the gifted adults they become. Site Copyright: Valentine Cawley, 2006 +

Amy Winehouse's Death: a Preventable Inevitability.

Amy Winehouse, 27, Is dead. No surprise there, I am afraid. Some deaths are more inevitable than others – particularly some early deaths.

Now, Amy Winehouse was famous for two attributes: her music and her addictions to drugs and alcohol. Indeed, it could be argued that she was more famous for her addictions than her music – since the former won her more tabloid newspaper coverage than the latter. She was always in the newspapers for things no-one would want to be in them for.

I can’t comment on her music, or its ultimate worth, since I didn’t really pay much attention to it. However, I can comment on her life and death: it seems overwhelmingly likely that she did not have to die so young. Her death, whilst an inevitable result of the lifestyle she led – was also preventable. There is a lesson here for all relatives of addicts: don’t stand by and watch – do something. Amy Winehouse would most probably be alive today, if others had been firmer with her on the matter of her addictions. Although the cause of death is not presently known, there are relatively few deaths, in the modern world, in 27 year olds, by natural causes. Given her drug addicted lifestyle, it seems most likely that her addictions contributed to her death – either directly, by overdose, or indirectly, through the health damage they caused.

If drug addicts (and that includes alchoholics) are not to die young, like Amy Winehouse, a certain lack of freedom should be imposed on them, until they are able to control themselves, with respect to their addictions. Amy Winehouse should have been monitored very closely, to ensure that she did not have access to any drugs or alchohol. I know it seems like such a regime would have denied her, her “rights”…but, really, who should have a “right”, to destroy themselves, by drugs? In such cases, it would be more humane, and ultimately less painful, to step in and directly prevent the addict from any access to the substances they would otherwise seek out. This may seem at odds with the belief that people should be allowed to live the lives they please – but, in the case of addicts, the lives they please will, most frequently, lead directly to early deaths. Thus, it seems reasonable to intervene, until such time as the addict is no longer an addict and, perhaps, has come to live their lives as if they value them.

It could be said, that drugs alone, didn’t kill Amy Winehouse, but a lack of love, by those closest to her. If they had truly loved her, they would have stepped in and made sure, beyond any doubt, that Amy Winehouse did not have access to any harmful drugs, legal or otherwise. That they did not, or were not effective in doing so, shows that they either did not love her enough, or did not understand the duties that come with that love. Sometimes, those who love another, feel they should indulge them and let them live the life they please. That is fine, only if the life desired, is not a self-destructive one. In all situations in which the loved one desires, consciously or otherwise, to destroy themselves, those who love have a duty to protect the life of the loved one, from harm. It does seem that that this was not done in this case. Amy Winehouse was famous for her inebriated, intoxicated, “shambolic” performances in the latter years of her life. So, clearly, she was not being denied access to drugs, legal or otherwise. Whatever “care” she was under, was not effective – or did not care to deny her what it should have done.

Amy Winehouse was a musician. This makes her loss more acute than a typical early death – for, in dying, whatever music she would have produced had she lived a normal life, will now never be. It is a pity, she was not protected from the most dangerous person in her life – herself.

Rest in peace, Amy.

Amy Winehouse was a very troubled person and no one deserves to live this kind of life where they hate themself so much or have so little respect for themselves they want to destroy themself by taking drugs or don't care what they do to themselves. I think Amy Winehouse must have had a very troubled childhood and teenage years and got involved with the wrong types of people. I think she could have been an amazing singer and she would be even better than she was if she sorted out her issues and had someone who really cared enough to help get her clean. I think Amy Winehouse death serves as a lesson to us all, don't get involved with drugs and once you do you may get addicted there may be no going back and even then it may be too late.

It seems to me that, whatever issues she had, drugs were never the answer. She found the wrong "solution" to her problems...a solution that destroyed her.

I think that Amy Winehouses life and career would have been much greater things if she had never taken her first hit, of any drug. She should have made creating things her "drug". Pity.

"who should have the right to destroy themselves?" How about everyone? Its called civil liberty Nazi.I didn't see you standing by her bedside "closely monitoring" her. I hate when people think they can decide how best others should live their life. She was an adult and like all adults she had the right to decide how to live your life.

Well, Jonathan, it is obvious that you are completely mad. I find, in general, that people who go around calling others "Nazi" are a) unoriginal b) usually not very bright c) much more likely to be a "Nazi" than the person they accuse.

It seems the issues are too complex for you to understand. Amy Winehouse was sick. She had what amounted to an ongoing mental illness: addiction to numerous substances. She needed help to save herself from the consequences of those addictions. Insufficient help was forthcoming. So she died. That is the scenario. If you can't understand that sick people need to be helped sometimes, then you are probably pretty sick yourself.

If Amy Winehouse had been closely monitored until she could conquer her addictions, she would be alive and would, most probably live out a full life. She is dead because of what you call "civil liberty".

I disagree with your view that everyone should have the right to destroy themselves: no-one should. You see, generally speaking, those who want to destroy themselves are mentally ill, in some way. These people should be helped, so that they can be lead to a better place in their lives in which they would not want to destroy themselves. It is called "getting better".

Your reaction is interesting. It suggests the possibility that you are a defensive drug taker yourself.

Another thought: Amy Winehouse was addicted to illegal drugs. "Civil liberty" as you call it, does NOT include the right to commit crimes, which Amy did on a daily basis. Those crimes killed her. She should have been spared that - and any HUMANE society would have spared her from that.

It is interesting that you don't know the difference between humane, life sparing intervention and "NAZI". Like I said, you are quite mad.

By the way, Jonathan. Your strange crticism that I didn't stand by her bedside closely monitoring her is somewhat impractical. For a start I live halfway around the world, from where Amy lived. Not only that, but I have a family to look after.

A nurse should have been appointed to look after her until she beat her addictions.

Furthermore, Jonathan, let us make this clear: your definition of "Nazi" is, implicitly, someone who saves other people from committing suicide. Interesting that you think it is Nazi like to save life. Like I said, you are quite mad.

Amy Winehouse was Talmudic Jewish, the most perverted religion in the world. From its own Babylonian Talmud one can assume that she was the victim of incest in her home. This would be the cause of her addiction.

Talmudic Bestiality

The Babylonian Talmud, the accepted and preferred version, further teaches that Adam committed bestiality.

"Yebamoth 63a. States that Adam had sexual intercourse with all the animals in the Garden of Eden."

"Yebamoth 59b. A woman who had intercourse with a beast is eligible to marry a Jewish priest. A woman who has sex with a demon is also eligible to marry a Jewish priest."

"Sanhedrin 55b. A Jew may marry a three year old girl (specifically, three years "and a day" old)."

"Sanhedrin 54b. A Jew may have sex with a child as long as the child is less than nine years old"

Kethuboth 11b. "When a grown-up man has intercourse with a little girl it is nothing."

Hi Val,

You sure gave it to Jonathan. E.T. almost got it right, but he has not researched Talmudic Judaism & the filth it preaches. Hollywood is one of its creations, also the Media is largely controlled by them. The Music Industry is also controlled by them, so you can see how even non-Jews are affected by their poison.

Without a knowledge of the Jewish Talmud, one is ignorant of the evil which these people spew out.

Adam the Bisexual?
"Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter." Isaiah 5:20

According to author Judy Weinberg, the Talmud, Midrash and Zohar present Adam as an hermaphrodite or bisexual:

"The Zohar (the central work of Jewish mysticism) develops a theory that Adam originally comprised both male and female elements. This is based on Talmudic and midrashic statements that "Adam, who was the first man, had two full faces" (Brachot 61a, Erubin 18b). Rabbi Samuel ben Nachman said: "When the Holy One, blessed be He, created the first man, he created him as a hermaphrodite."
